Otter had his first seizure when he was 3 1/2 years old. He was diagnosed with a very rare case of epilepsy called Doose Syndrome and suffered from several different types of seizures, including grand mals. We tried several meds that were unsuccessful and he was fading fast, having 50-75 drop seizures a day. We were told to expect mental retardation and that the Ketogenic diet was a last resort.
While researching online, I found a pediatric neurologist from Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. We flew out to see him and started the modified Atkins diet. Otter was seizure-free within a few days. He had a few break-through seizures in the following months but has remained seizure-free for over 2 years. His EEG went from showing constant seizure activity to being completely normal. He came off the diet in September 2009, and after a small set-back he remains seizure-free today.
